How to choose your photographer – by Tim Sabatino

Actors, Models, Musicians, Business Men and Women, at some point in your career, you will need photography. Wether it is for headshots, publicity portraits, album cover, corporate headshot or modeling portfolio, you will end up under the eye of the camera. And it can be intimidating. And if you’re not comfortable, it’ll show in your pictures. So what can you do?

Choose your photographer wisely!

It is important that you have a good positive connection with your photographer, that you trust he can do the job well and give you what you  need. So how do you choose?

  1. Know what you want! Too often, we encounter clients who have no idea what they want, thus making it tricky for the photographer to give you an appropriate quote and to deliver the right product for you. Know what you need and want so you can describe it accurately to the photographer you contact.
  2. Find a photographer. Honestly, the best way to do this is asking around and getting referrals. Word of mouth is a great way to get comfortable because you’re not just “cold calling” someone about whom you know nothing. Talk to other people in your industry. Who did they use as photographer and were they satisfied?  You can also search online: google “photographer – your city – what you need”. That should give you quite an extensive list, but then you’ll have to sort through the crooks and beginners to find the pros.
  3. Do your homework! Get on the photographer’s website, look at his/her portfolio. Do you like his/her work? Is it the style of photography that you want for your project?
  4. Get in touch with the photographer and have a real conversation. Yes, person to person, not just via email or text. You need to talk to the photographer so you can have a feel of his/her personality.
  5. Ideally you should meet with the photographer in person, check out his place. Is his studio clean and tidy? Is he professional and polite? How does he make you feel? Does he validate you or invalidate you? This is a great opportunity to discuss in details and with visuals what is needed and wanted, and to make sure that you get along with the photographer.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with him/her? Easy. Move on! Find another photographer and start over at step 2. There are hundreds and hundreds of photographers out there. There will be one that you will like, I guarantee it!

At Theta Creata Productions, we love to serve you to the best of our abilities. Tim Sabatino has been a professional photographer for over 20 years. He will take the time to listen to you and understand your needs so as to deliver the perfect product!

Tim Sabatino: On Photographing Princess Joy Villa

Joy Villa!!! She’s super smart, she’s beautiful, she’s determined and she’s going to hit it big!

Joy Villa is an actress, a singer-songwriter, a musician, an actress, a writer, a nutrition coach and now a bodybuilder competitor. This girl is on fire and she is capable of everything!

Joy is a power house. When she puts her mind on something, she makes it happen. And more than just happen, she becomes successful at it! For example, Joy signed up for her first bodybuilding competition a couple months ago. She worked really hard for weeks to transform her body, all while remaining healthy, which can be tricky in the world of bodybuilding with all the false data about building muscle and being vegan. The competition was this weekend: Not only did she reach her goal and participated, she did so with honors as she left the stage with not one but two trophies!!!

Joy has already written several books: Poems by the Princess was published in 2013, and The Fit And Sexy Vegan just got published this year. It is a nutritional program that teaches the basics of a healthy body, mind and lifestyle. Joy loves to inspire and help others, and she does so through coaching. As a vegan athlete, she is proof that no one needs meat to have enough protein and that the vegan way of life is actually one of the most ethical there is.

Tim Sabatino met Joy Villa at a self-improvement seminar on New Year’s Eve 2011. They immediately became friends. Her positive attitude and her love for life and people are her most communicable characteristics, and it’s simply impossible to not love her at once. Joy assisted Tim on the Kasem Diaries photo shoot that he did with Kerri Kasem in 2012 (Click here to read about that collaboration), shooting and editing the behind the scenes video, which you can watch below.

Tim later photographed Joy for his Sensuelle fine art photography collection.

Joy Villa is engaged to Danish photographer Thorsten Von Overgaard.

Tim Sabatino: On Working with actress Lucy Hale

Tim Sabatino: On working with Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale is an american actress and singer, know for the TV shows Bionic Woman, Privileged and Pretty Little Liars. She was born in Mississippi but moved to Los Angeles in hopes of getting a record deal. Lucy was a winner of the show American Juniors in 2003 and was part of the vocal quintet formed with the top 5 finishers, but the group disbanded in 2005. Lucy describes music as her first love. Her debut single “You Sound Good To Me” was released in January 2014 and her album Road Between followed shortly after.

Lucy Hale booked several guest roles on TV shows before being cast as a recurring role in Bionic Woman in 2007. She got her big screen debut in 2008 in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. She then co-stared in the CW show Privilege, followed by the lead role in the TV show Pretty Little Liars, from 2009 to present, for which she won Teen Choice Award and People’s Choice Award several years in a row.

Tim Sabatino had the honor of photographing Lucy Hale on several occasions, as well as Lucy’s cousin, Madison McMillin who is a talented singer, model and entrepreneur.

Tim Sabatino: On working with Renee Horton

Renee Horton. She’s cool, she’s smart and she’s hot! And today, we want you to know who she is!

Renee is a dancer, a ballerina, an actress, a model, a host and a philanthropist. She was a professional dancer for Taylor Swift, she appeared the TV series The Vampire Diaries and she was a series regular on the shows Young Blade and Nashville Notes. You have also seen Renee in several music videos including Till My Last Day by Justin Moore (See video below) in which she is the lead actress.

Tim Sabatino, Photographer: On working with OPI nail polish

OPI, originally named Odontorium Products Inc., was a small dental supply company purchased by George Schaeffer in 1981. Shortly after taking over the company, Schaeffer was joined by Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI’s Executive Vice President and Artistic Director. Schaeffer and Weiss-Fischmann partnered with R. Eric Montgomery, a biochemist, and created an acrylic system that Schaeffer sold door-to-door to local nail salons. They closed the dental sales and focused entirely on nail products changing the name to OPI Products Inc.

OPI has GREAT nail polish! Nail polish that last and is as hard as teeth enamel 🙂 And it’s a company that wants to be safe for you: in 2007, OPI reformulated its nail lacquers and eliminated chemicals DBP (dibutyl phthalate), formaldehyde and toluene.

OPI also does good for the community: Schaeffer established the Schaeffer Family Foundation to offer aid to organizations such as the Leukemia Research Foundation, Rock the Vote and Project Hope International, among many others. After such disasters as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, OPI employees banded together and raised $350,000 for the American Red Cross. OPI created exclusive lacquers shades for the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Since 2006, OPI has supported the breast cancer awareness organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with its exclusive shade series, Pink of Hearts.

Tim Sabatino is very proud to have worked with OPI. Watch his interview here:
